Quinte West, ON June 9, 2021: Since 2007, the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation has been awarding local community groups, students and staff with grants and bursaries from the Kay Stafford
legacy. To-date nearly $2 million has been given away, well surpassing the original donation in 1996 of $1.2 million. Kay Stafford left a gift that keeps giving and will forever. Through zoom tonight, sixteen local groups received support for local projects that will benefit and enhance services at Trenton Memorial Hospital in addition to 6 High School students, 1 Loyalist student and thirteen hospital staff. A total of $153,248 was given out tonight.
The event began with a welcome from the Chair, Darrell Smith followed a land acknowledgement then a history of the Kay Stafford Memorial Fund from Wendy Warner the TMHF Executive Director. Kay
Stafford lived a full life before passing away at the age of 86 of Alzheimer’s. Upon her passing she requested that her executor ensure her donation to the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation would be invested so that it would “keep giving” beyond her passing. As per her wishes only the investment income is used each year to support TMH Staff education, Student Education and community grants that show a benefit to the health of both Quinte West and Brighton residents and in turn how their project/equipment will enhance the services at Trenton Memorial Hospital. The TMH Foundation manages the Kay Stafford with help of Fund advisors Connor Clark and Lund advisors.
Since her death, the Kay Stafford Fund has supported the community through 213 gifts to charities, 80 bursaries and 335 Trenton Memorial Hospital staff for continuing education. Also, her gift has inspired several others from our community to do the same and endow their gifts to the Foundation with only the investment income being used annually, namely Edward Meyers, Roli and Audrey Terrill, Wes and Doris Rees to name a few. Ordinary people doing extra-ordinary things. Their gifts will continue to support health care in their community long after they are gone.
