STIRLING ON August 23, 2022: The sun was shining and no doubt the late John Smylie was looking down at his friends and colleagues golfing at Oak Hills Golf Course and beaming with pride. The newly named Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation Golf Classic presented by Pioneer Healthcare in honour of Foundation board member John Smylie is a signature event in the Quinte region. This year sixty-eight foursomes took to the links on Friday August 12th. In addition to the golfers, more than fifty volunteers helped to make the day a huge success. After expenses, an outstanding $135,747.29 was raised for the purchase of a new Washer Disinfector used in the Sterile Processing Department for the Surgical Unit and Minor Treatment Clinics at Trenton Memorial Hospital.
Golfers were greeted with cheers from John’s family at the first hole with a life size photo of John. Then throughout the course were little reminders of John’s sense of humour with the Price is right games giving away pizza ovens, a chipping contest into John’s ear muffs, to his favourite marshmallow game.
“We are so grateful to John’s family for their support this year. From their sponsorship to donations of prizes, to their in-store promotion to help raise more for the hospital.” says Wendy Warner Executive Director of TMHF “John was passionate about supporting the hospital that saved his life 16 years ago.”
Peter Webb, Board member and Chair of the Golf Classic said “You could feel the excitement on the course, as everyone took pride knowing their participation was helping to provide life-saving medical equipment for Trenton Memorial Hospital.”
Guests of the tournament include local business leaders, dignitaries and members of the medical community as well as representatives from CFB Trenton. In recent years, the Golf Classic has raised funds to support the purchase of a CT scanner, to fund an inpatient room, Smart IV pumps and other critically needed equipment. Winners this year included:
