Trenton To Have More Than Just a Digital Mammography Unit…
1 in 8 women are at risk of getting Breast Cancer. Statistics in our region indicate that approximately 20% of women screened require follow-up based on their abnormal or suspicious results. As there is currently no means of preventing breast cancer, the focus in reducing deaths from the disease has been on finding breast cancer as early as possible. QHC offers mammography based breast screening at the Trenton, Belleville and Picton sites. New at QHC – Trenton is a Comprehensive Breast Assessment Centre.
Upon finding an abnormal screen patients must move quickly towards any subsequent treatment. All abnormal breast screens from QHC screening sites will be automatically booked for follow-up within 5 days at the Trenton Breast Assessment Centre.
The visit will consist of additional mammography views and/or a breast ultrasound, a radiologist consult and if required an ultrasound guided biopsy. The pathology results from all biopsies will be communicated to the patient or family physician within 3-5 days of the biopsy. This means that a definitive diagnosis will be given to the majority of women within 2 weeks (versus the current 12 weeks) of an abnormal screen.
Staff will provide medical care and navigate the patient through the diagnostic process, to the appropriate resources, communicate with physicians, facilitate surgical referral and/or follow-up, and much more.
The QH Trenton Memorial Breast Assessment Centre is anticipating over 1600 patients per year. The cost to equip the Breast Assessment Centre including the Digital Mammography Machine is $650,000.
