Annual Golf Tournament has raised over $600,000 for Medical Equipment at QH- Trenton Memorial
The annual Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament Sponsored by Scotia Asset Management and Leons was hosted at Timber Ridge golf course on Friday, August 20th, 2010. It was a very successful tournament, with 168 golfers, 17 corporate sponsors, 26 hole sponsors, 3 hole in one sponsors and several gift sponsors for the silent auction.
The day was filled with good weather, great golfing and fabulous food prepared by Phil Panelas, former Chair of the TMH Foundation, who each year barbeques magnificent steaks donated by Smylie’s Independent Grocer for dinner and new this year, gyro for lunch. In addition to the immaculate meals, golfers were treated to the taste of Casa-Dea’s wines and 5th Town’s cheese on a wine and cheese station on the course.
Since the tournament’s inception, it has netted over $600,000 for the purchase of priority medical equipment at QH- Trenton Memorial. This year’s tournament raised a gross total of $102,478, with cost to raise a dollar being 27 cents. With the proceeds of the tournament, the Foundation will be able to purchase some of the necessary equipment that the Hospital needs to better serve the community such as the Green Light Laser. The acquisition of this specialized piece of surgical equipment will place Trenton Memorial Hospital on the leading edge of Laser surgery for prostate and other urinary track disorders. Currently this technology is only available in Scarborough, Hamilton and Saskatoon.
Unique to the tournament this year was the addition of a few new challenges. They included, Longest Marshmallow Drive, Beat the Pro, Go for the Green and the Accuracy Hit. In the “Longest Marshmallow Drive”, players saw how far down the green they could hit a marshmallow. The three marsh mellow driving experts who tied for distance were Brian Asher, Steve Thompson, and Troy Sweet, each taking home a Nestle Gift Basket. In “Beat the Pro”, players took turns attempting to beat Jodie Jenkins’s shot. If successful, their names were entered into a draw to win golf and carts for two from Loyalist Golf & Country Club. The winner of this was Margie Ray. The “Go for the Green” competition, ran by Manulife Financial, had players trying to win cash. Players had to land their ball on at least 50% of the face of the many dollar bills laid out on the putting green in order to keep it. Finally, the “Accuracy Hit” had players aiming to hit a wheelchair for a chance to win a $200 G/C to Canadian Tire, donated by Wilkinson Financial. The winner who claimed this prize was Greg Callahan.
Linda Robertson proved to have the straightest drive taking home a TaylorMade driver. Brad Conley won the “Putting” contest and was rewarded with a ghost putter donated by Taylor Made. Dale Willard from Canadian Blast Freezers won the 50/50 draw. Ken generously donated his winnings back to the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation. The winning team of the event was Jean Panelas, Chris Dingman, and Manny Pereira who came in 15 under par. Congratulations!
